In terms of numbers, the languages &#8220;Temne&#8221; and &#8220;Mende&#8221; are the most widespread, spoken by about 60 percent of the total population.<br \/>\nSince the settlement of today&#8217;s capital Freetown by returned freed slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries, Krio (Creole) has established itself as the lingua franca and lingua franca.
